Snowshoeing is Fun Fitness

– Snowshoeing really is fun fitness just don’t think of it that way. Get out and enjoy a winter day. Have some fun!

But, by the way, snowshoeing is great fitness. You burn more calories snowshoeing than you can walking, running or cross-country skiing at the same pace. And your effort is about the same. Think about that…

Snowshoeing is great for you. It provides a cardio workout while also building the key physical elements of strength, agility, balance and endurance. Snowshoeing is the best bang-for-your-buck, fat-burning workout in winter according to the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado’s Health Science Center. It’s an exceptional way to reduce your chance of heart disease. It’s doesn’t take a lot of money to get started snowshoeing, it is easily mastered, and fun.

Snowshoers can burn between 420-1000 calories per hour. It is an effective, low impact, and safe form of exercise to lose weight and build strength. It burns up to twice the number of calories as walking at the same speed.  Snowshoers can vary the intensity of their workout, burning fewer calories by taking an easy walk around the golf course or Spring Creek, or getting a more intense workout (more than 1,000 calories burned per hour) by hiking through powder up steeper slopes or up the ski mountain at a faster pace. Snowshoe with poles and even at a slow pace you will increase your fitness.

So the thing is to not think about the great workout you’re getting. The thing to think about is being outside on a beautiful winter day with your friends and feeling stronger and stronger and stronger…

Ready to go snowshoeing! You betcha! Ya sure!
