Rabbit Ears West Summit: A Ski Haus Trail Report

Rabbit Ears West Summit: A Ski Haus Trail Report

Winter Is Here!

The rumors are true folks.  Steamboat Springs is experiencing a record breaking October.  The ski resort has already received 44” of snow for this month.  Rabbit Ears Pass isn’t looking too shabby either.  And since we have a little over three weeks before the resort opens, I traded in the hiking boots for some cross country skis and checked out Rabbit Ears West Summit to bring you your Ski Haus Trail Report.

How To Get to Rabbit Ears West Summit

If you’re from the area, you know all about this local gem.  This moderate 4-mile loop trail sits just under 9,400 ft. up Rabbit Ears Pass.  From Steamboat, you’ll drive about 10-15 minutes east on 40, and you’ll see a fairly large pull-off on your left.  It is very likely that you’ll see a few cars already parked, as well as a large trail sign, so it will be hard to miss.

What to Expect on Rabbit Ears West Summit Loop 1A

This is a moderate trail, meaning that it does have a few small climbs, as well as a few hills to make some decent turns if you choose.  It is not groomed, but you will have plenty of tracks to lead the way.  If you’re new to the sport, I’d recommend going counter-clockwise on the loop for an out-n-back, just so you can get the hang of it.  Roughly the first mile of this direction is pretty mellow, with a cruisy stroll through the aspens and evergreens into an open meadow.  But if you’re in search of a few nice turns and less steep climbing, I’d recommend you go clockwise on the loop.
