Light, Nimble, and Comfortable: Osprey Talon and Tempest Daypacks

Backpacking, Day Hiking, Biking.

Two of our favorite packs for day hiking are the Osprey Talon and Tempest. For quick blitz trips through red rock country or alpine hikes far above timberline – these packs are light, comfortable, and a joy to carry.

The Talon is designed for guys and the Tempest is designed for gals. Pack a lunch, grab the rain gear,  map & compass, a few extra essentials, and off you go carrying one of the most comfortable packs you’ll ever own.

There is a long list of features that we really like about these packs and one of the main reasons is they come in torso sizes. Talon sizes are S/M or M/L and Tempest torso sizes are WXS/S or WS/M. If you have 5’6″ hiker and another hiker who is 6’0″ you might be surprised how often the shorter person takes the longer torso length and the tall person takes the shorter length. It is not so uncommon. The torso lengths are important because it refers to how you are put together (leg length vs. torso length) not just your overall height.

So not only do you get to choose whether you like a top loader or a panel loader, 5 different pack sizes, but you get a terrific fitting pack with the torso length options, and adjustable shoulder straps on the larger volume packs. The perfect fit is easy to find with these packs.

The harness system for these packs is all about staying comfortable and cool. Cut outs on the shoulder straps and hip belt keep you cooler with increased airflow. The the hip belt is seamless between the lumbar area and the hip belt creating a nice wrap around your hips and lower back.

The backpanel has mesh covered foam ridges to create air space and air flow around your back. The backpanel won’t prevent you from sweating as you hike up the hill but you will stay a lot more comfortable with this Airscape backpanel.

The packs easily accommodate a water reservoir or water bottles. A couple pockets on the hipbelt, a top pocket, the main pack compartment and a large stretch mesh panel on the front will handle all your equipment needs for a long day on the trail.

Osprey’s Stow-On-The-Go trekking pole attachment, Lid Lock (for rigging your bike helmet), ice axe loops, and some reflective hits on the packs make these packs perfect for hiking, biking, going from class to class on campus, and easy for anytime you have to carry more than what fits in your hands.
