– “Thunk” is the sound of a well placed ice pick into the frozen wall of Fish Creek Falls. Kick and the sound of sliding ice falling from your crampon’s frontpoints slamming into the ice only enhances the feeling of exposure. Are the placements solid? Kick again? Go for it and step up? Swing the ice axe once more? No. Yes. What the heck – go ahead and step up. It’s only a few little pieces of steel pinned into vertical waterfall-ice holding you against the tug of gravity… what’s to worry about?
Ice climbing Fish Creek Falls may not be a lot of people’s first choice when they think of things to do in Steamboat Springs. But it should be. The view from deep inside the canyon back out to the valley is a unique perspective. It’s a blast to watch the Falls in the summer and think about yourself having climbed the darn thing just a few short months ago.
Fish Creek Falls is the perfect frozen waterfall for your first ice climbing experience or even for an advanced climber it’s a fun climb to keep your focus, practice technique, and keep the climbing muscles fresh.
Last week some members of the Ski Haus staff got together with our friends from Rocky Mountain Ventures for a playday on the ice. The photos were taken by Ski Haus employee Owen Fairman. Great photos. Thanks Owen!
